Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS)

The Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) was developed in 1990 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Division of Adolescent and School Health (DASH) to monitor priority health risk behaviors of adolescents that contribute to the leading causes of death, disability, and social problems among youth and adults in the United States.  These behaviors, often established during childhood and early adolescence, include:

• Tobacco Use
• Unhealthy Dietary Behaviors
• Inadequate Physical Activity
• Alcohol and Other Drug Use
• Sexual behaviors that contribute to unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted  infections (STI), including HIV infection
• Behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and violence

The Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) will help Arkansas identify public school students' current health and safety habits so that improvements can be made where needed.  Healthy lifestyles for Arkansas students mean longer, more productive lives for the states' young people, as well as imporved learning in the classroom.
