Coordinated School Health
Goal of the program:
The children and adolescents of Arkansas will become healthy, successful students at school and contributing members in their communities. This is the vision of Arkansas Coordinated School Health. Coordinated School Health (CSH) is a collaborative research-based collaboration between the Arkansas Department of Education (ADE) and the Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) to effectively address students' health, thus improving their ability to learn.
The CSH design focuses on the following eight (8) components:
- Comprehensive K - 12 Health Education
- Comprehensive K - 12 Physical Education and Physical Activity programs
- Nutrition Services
- School Health Services
- Counseling, Psychological, and Social Services
- Healthy School Environment
- Staff Wellness and Promotion
- Family and Community Involvement
Services provided.
Services provided by the Arkansas CSH program are intended to provide the necessary tools for schools to address health issues. The state-wide Coordinated School Health program provides and seeks start-up funding for schools. Schools funded for CSH receive training/workshops regarding how to create a community wide infrastructure that will support CSH. Technical assistance is provided to assist in locating local resources, implementing activities and performing evaluations. The Arkansas CSH team engages in state-wide strategic planning for school health initiatives in Arkansas.
Funding for the program.
Currently, Arkansas CSH is primarily funded at ADE with a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/Division of Adolescent and School Health (CDC/DASH). DHHS/ADH has also provided funding for CSH through the School-Based Tobacco Prevention Grants awarded for the school year 2007-2008. These grants are guided by CSH.
State or Federal Law that regulates the program.
Arkansas CSH is currently not regulated by legislation.
